The Doggyality Method

The Method

The Doggyality method places heavy emphasis on cognitive learning. This style establishes trusted and respected leadership for humans, and a happy, well balanced life for dogs.

The goal is for your dog to learn behavior, not just learn to perform it.

Instead of asking dogs to assimilate to our world, we should be meeting them halfway. That means learning more about what the world is like from their perspective. Once we do that, we can help them adjust in a manner that is consistent with their strengths and abilities. And since each dog is an individual, there is no perfect formula or one-size-fits-all method that will work for every dog.

What is Cognitive Training?

Cognitive techniques make lasting mental impressions, allowing an owner to have more control over the dog’s mind, rather than physical correction. The tools we use are impulse and space control, plus counter conditioning exercises. Since every dog is unique, the approach will differ from case to case. My techniques are largely non verbal and non contact.

Cognitive based training utilizes the thought process of both dog and human. When things become too routine oriented, the thought process disappears and the action becomes reflex. For example, many owners ask for paw immediately following a sit. After a while, dog performs sit, then automatically raises paw without command. Ideally, the dog should be thinking and wait for the paw command.

We work on issues at the core. You want your dog to stop barking. I want to know why your dog is barking and work on the issue from there. We can stop the barking, but if the underlying issue is not dealt with, another behavior will take its place. Humans must maintain a cognitive process as well to ensure the dog understands what we want. Effective communication is necessary. I will show you how body language, posture, and state of mind guide the dog into making better decisions.

The focus is more on state of mind than body position. We employ a choice based system. By allowing the dog to work through the learning process, they are more likely to repeat the positive behaviors and reduce the negative behaviors. Unwanted behaviors took time to develop, they will take time to overcome. My method, along with your dedication, positive energy, and confident state of mind will earn your dog’s respect. Consistency and patience will keep it.

Procedure

Identify goals, and implement exercises to achieve those goals. We reinforce good decisions, correct unwanted behavior. We establish the regimen that becomes your dog’s new way of life.

Consistency

It’s not just what we do, and when we interact with our dogs, it’s also how we do it.  We must be committed to reinforce positive behavior.  If we stay consistent, we don’t confuse our dogs with mixed messages.

Patience

Our dogs are always sizing us up.  They read our body language, and smell the physiological responses of our emotions.  With a cognitive process, we look to out will the dog, not physically dominate.  It will take some time and practice to adjust to a different routine.  If we stay patient, we earn trust and respect.

Positive Energy

You will see demonstrations of your dog’s capabilities during our session.  Seeing is believing.  Accomplishment is empowering.  When your dog makes a mistake, it’s an opportunity to show them the right way.  Training exercises with your dog should be viewed as meaningful interactions, not chores.  Stay positive, your dog is counting on you.

The Doggyality Philosophy

My philosophy is that people have personality, and dogs have Doggyality.  Dogs see, hear, and smell the world differently than humans.  It’s my job to teach you to communicate with your dog in a language they understand.  This will establish a bond between dog and human that enhances the group dynamic, and encourages individual growth.
